romy and michele's high school reunion.

one of the essential style movies, romy and michele's high school reunion pits palm beach party girls (mira sorvino and lisa kudrow) against the uptight pastel-clad bitches of tuscon's sagebrush secondary school. janeane garofalo, camryn manheim, 'ramon' and post-its (!) helped cement this campy classic, arguably one of the most colorful films of that irreverent decade, into legendary standing.

you'd be hard-pressed to find many of these similar styles on today's catwalks. let's be real, the originals are just so... um, unique. versace, cavalli, and other 'high-end-tacky' houses could definitely recreate a fabulous white/weinberger knock-off, don't you think?

for the gal on the go, donna karan has got you covered with an updated and modernized interpretation of the ultimate working-woman look: ultra-chic pinstripe suits and the sassiest of lady-blazers mean that you'll be ready for that all-important business meeting (whether you actually have a job or not).

for beauty's sake: sweetie

occasionally, one will stumble upon a film with the ability to transport its viewer to another world. oftentimes, it does so without the aid of words or the allure of music. but, simply, with an image.

sweetie (1989) is jane campion's beguiling tale of two dysfunctional sisters living in two very different fantasy worlds. despite the film's sombre subject matter, the scenes are virtually aglow with the most spectacularly upbeat colors, complemented by rich, vivid hues and a spectacular vintage feel. an altogether visual feast. as you will see, each and every still reads like a painting: cindy sherman, william eggleston, guy bourdin. spooky... sublime... bizarre...

taking a break from fashion (despite some fantastically kitschy frocks scattered throughout), we invite you to feast your eyes on the big, bright world of this tiny, beautiful australian film in our new segment, 'for beauty's sake.' so take notes!

no comparisons. no critiques. just pictures. pretty, pretty pictures.
